Everyone faces betrayal at some point in their life. Many times when there is a divorce or a partnership split, both sides feel they have been betrayed. When you find yourself in this spot, you can either hire an attorney and spend an undefined amount of time paying to relive something negative that happened in the past, or you can swallow your pride and decide that it will not impact your future. Deciding to move on allows you to truly leave your past in the past and it gives you the ability to learn from the experience.
Mark Cuban was betrayed early on in his career. During the second year of his first business, his secretary whited out the names on checks Mark had already signed and embezzled every single dollar out of his account before he knew he was broke. If you ever started a business you know how valuable that $83,000 must have been to his growing business. His reaction was very telling of his view on battling betrayal:
"I had to go back to work. Worrying about revenge and getting pissed at her and the bank was a waste of time and energy. No one was going to cover my obligations but me. I had to get my ass back to work, and do so quickly. That's exactly what I did".
Imagine how the world might be different if he spent the next twelve months trying to get revenge instead of focusing on growing his business. For starters, he probably would not be on Shark Tank! Now, he considers that experience a footnote in the story of his career. Next time you are betrayed, don't continue to relive the betrayal…make it a footnote instead.
