Like synergy, the law of increasing returns can defy simple logic. The law states, "If you render more service than that for which you are paid, you will soon be paid for more than you render.” Hear are a few reasons why this principle holds true:
1) When you go above and beyond, you are offering someone the gift of value. When you give someone a gift, the natural response is to reciprocate and give you something in return. This is where the increasing return begins.
2) While you are giving value, you are also building trust. As soon as everyone knows that you are more focused on others than yourself, everyone is going to be on your side.
3) Even if you cannot quantify what the return will be on the front end, always give more than is expected. Whether it is a customer or an employer, if you give more than you are paid for you will gain knowledge, experience, and allies that you would not have had otherwise.
Remember that successful people are always willing to go above and beyond while those with a victim mentality are always asking, "What's in it for me?" As Robert Woodruff, former president of Coca Cola, always said, "There is no limit to where someone can go, or what they can accomplish, if they don't mind who gets the credit.”
